I was that excited about the quality of this year's Breakfest lineup, I decided to put a little mix together featuring (most of) the international artists on the bill's tunes, and here it is!
Admittedly, there is no Hedflux and only an acapella from Meat Katie on here, they're both all about the groove and the progression and I felt just jamming one of their tunes into this mix didn't really do them justice!
That said, Hedflux is a good friend and has been a massive inspiration over the years! He has continually been at the cutting edge of production and it's techniques. Forging his own style, which many others have tried to replicate, yet don't quite seem to! Possibly also one of the nicest, most down to earth people I've ever met too! Testament to this, he has actually offered his latest EP for whatever you choose to pay, you can even grab it for free if you're stingy. At least throw him a couple of bucks though. I highly recommend you check it out here ---> http://hedflux.bandcamp.com/
As far as Meat Katie goes, let's face it. He's been a long time stalwart of the Breakbeat/Tech Funk scene worldwide, and no stranger to Perth. Actually, I'd say he's quite a favourite here! If you've been sleeping under a rock for the last decade or two and are unfamiliar with his formidable body of work, you can check it out here. https://soundcloud.com/meat-katie (I also recommend his "Lowering The Tone" podcast series, one of which features Perth's own, Micah Black! )
So, onto the mix...! It's basically a progression of nu/ghetto funk, right through to the pumping breakbeat that's going to destroy the Amphitheatre (in the best possible way).
Starting with a cheeky Janette Slack intro (which is actually released on her label Slack Trax, and couple of the dons of funky breaks, Stickybuds and Featurecast. Both of which have a stack of tunes you can also grab for free at
Iconic Aussie producer Nick Thayer is next up with "Worlds Collide" on the legendary imprint, OWSLA, owned and run by none other than Skrillex. Heavy!
Then we have a tune from breakbeat royalty, Deekline onto which I've dropped the acapella of his "Hold Your Head Up High" feat Gala Orsborn. The original tune this was taken from was dropped by Lady Waks last year to devastating effect, amongst what many regarded as the standout set of the day/night.
Mafia Kiss is represented next with his remix of the aforementioned Deekline, alongside Hardy Hard with "Can't Hide It"
Legends of the breakbeat scene worldwide, and regular visitors to Perth - Stanton Warriors are next up, with one of the big tunes of recent months/2013 featuring Them & Us, "Cut Me Up"
And then there is the Plump DJs! Rocking Belvoir with a "Retro Breaks set" this year which I've gotta say I'm pretty stoked about! With such an impressive back catalogue, I found it hard to pick what tune to feature in this mix. Ask any breakbeat dj what made them get into breakbeat and 9 times out of 10, "The Plumps" will get a mention! I've chosen "The Rub Off" but the arsenal of seminal and influential tunes these guys have at their disposal is nothing short of jaw dropping. If you're unfamiliar, your life may be changed forever as mine was at Ambar in the early 2000's.
More Janette Slack up next, this time alongside Kickflip and Javone Prince with "You Can't Stop This". Her talents upon the decks are undeniable, and her stage presence is magnetic, a born performer. In all honesty, predicting how her set is going to go down (other than a treat) is tough. To get a rough idea, you could peek her recent mix here https://soundcloud.com/janetteslack/janetteslack-oct-tg
More Mafia Kiss, another CLASSIC Stanton Warriors tune, with a bunch of my own edits thrown in at the end for good measure.
DnB heads, sorry. No LTJ Bukem or Dom & Roland on this mix either. Breaks is what I do, I didn't feel the need to just chuck a couple of their tunes on the end of this mix, I'm sure you know what to expect though. Both significant figures in their own right and sure to bring some heat (as if Belvoir won't be toasty enough).
Anyway, hope you all enjoy the mix. Please feel free to download, comment and share around!
If you actually made to the end of the write up, high fives and fist bumps on the day are definitely in order. Respect!
