RONNIE TURNER (Blunted Funk Project/ The Slacksons/Ronsta Trax)BULLETPROOFSONICS
Ronnie Turner’s career in dance music reads like a who’s who of clubland legends.
Turner cut his teeth as a teenager in the early ’80s playing alongside UK funk and soul stars like Sean French, Robbie Vincent, Jeff Young and Greg Edwards at his own promotions.
He went on to become a regular DJ at the original house nights at the Slough Centre in 1989, alongside London house pioneers Carl Cox, Trevor Fung, Danny Rampling, Brandon Block and Rocky & Diesel.
And later played alongside American heavyweights Danny Tenaglia, Doc Marten and Tony Humphries at seminal Sunday session Full Circle.
More recently renowned under his Blunted Funk Project and as one half of The Slacksons, Turner looks forward to imminent release of forthcoming remixes of a new track by 70s disco dons Odyssey called NY City Girl.
Meanwhile, upcoming Slacksons and BFP releases will see Turner link up with Brit-funk hero Noel McKoy, London house stalwart Stuart Patterson and living legend Sir Tom Jones.
The Tom Jones project originally began life in 2007 as a Slacksons bootleg called It’s Unusual, a rework of the Welsh wonder’s 1971 hit Resurrection Shuffle. Now, after lots of red tape and red faces, the track has finally been officially cleared and a full release is just weeks away.
Back in the day, Turner’s rich DJ pedigree also saw him play at the Safari Park Soul nights. He ran his own weekly promotion in Maidenhead from 88 - 90 and helped set up iconic central London house night Shave Your Tongue in 1992.
But production has earned him most plaudits over the last two decades. Signed to Brighton’s Loaded Records in the mid-90s, he enjoyed a UK national Top 50 release Gimme Your Love as Home Alone, before setting up his own label Bulletproofsonics with Slacksons co-writer Andy Childs (ex-Elevator Suite).
Remix credits include Tortured Soul ,Noel Mckoy ,Bodyrox,Richard Seaborne,Nephunk and The JBs, with a very limited edition 12” release of the latter’s Goodfoot due out in August.
Those much-anticipated Odyssey remixes will be available at the beginning of the September, as part of the group’s next single package, while Bulletproofsonics embark on a hectic autumn/winter schedule of at least one release a month.
Also look out for an album project release with Bristol-based rapper Frilla, famed for his Statix crew, also a Best of Bulletproofsonics compilation scheduled for later in the year and for regular DJ sets from Turner at East Village in Shoreditch.
