Germinate by Robin McLaughlin published on 2018-01-09T01:57:20Z Written for the Oraia Reed Quintet. Germinate takes its inspiration between two ideas – one, the germinal nature of musical motives, and two, the growth of plants. I have always been intrigued by the biological connotations of the definition of developing variation – germinal variations on a given motive. In this piece, I take as extramusical inspiration the narrative of a seed undergoing the biological process of germination. After the seed has waited for the right conditions, transformations of a two-note motive signify growth as the seed absorbs and reacts so that it can send a stem to the surface. Genre Classical
