Dear music lover,
With this ALBUM I present to you very special piano pieces, which I have arranged to a little "Dream Journey" or “wandering through the night of the dreams”. The ALBUM contains works of nine composers, who composed the respective works explicitly for piano. The range of styles extends from romanticism (Schumann, Liszt, Karganoff, Tchaikovsky, Taneyev, Lyapunov, Grieg) to impressionism (Debussy) and the early avant-garde (Casella).
The focus of my compilation is on so called “Berceuses” and “Dreams”. For berceuses the slow-weighing rhythm is typical. The composers always tied in with this basic form of the lullaby: But they were tempted to compose their very own and special interpretation of this fascinating musical form. Particularly popular are flat keys such as D flat major, which sound dark, mysterious, but also warm. But there are also the sharp keys, especially when it must be a little brighter and sweeter. Edvard Grieg's Berceuse, for example, is in G major. The most famous Berceuses on this ALBUM are those by Debussy, Grieg and Liszt. The "Berceuse Héroïque" by Debussy - of which, incidentally, there is also a slightly modified orchestral version - is in the unusual and rare key of E flat minor. The two berceuses by Génari Karganoff, on the other hand, are considered rarities in classical discography.
The "Dreams" are mostly very free, small fantasies with thoughtful, introverted character and without a fixed original form. By far the most famous work of this genre is the romantic "Träumerei" (Dreamery) from Robert Schumann's “Scenes from Childhood”, followed by Debussy's "Rêverie". By the way, many works come from cycles that have a clear reference to the childish: e.g. Debussy's "Jimbo's Lullaby" from "Children's Corner", Casella's "Berceuse" from the "11 pezzi Infantili" or Tchaikovsky's "Sweet Dream" from his “Youth album”.
Both forms of music resemble each other in their quiet, dreamy and imaginative way.
The 78-minute ALBUM contains berceuses and dreams as well as other similar musical forms: For example, the dream journey begins with a beautiful "Sérénade" in D flat major by Karganoff, which as evening music sets the mood for the forthcoming night. Berceuses, dreams, sleep songs, slumber songs and goodnight songs follow, which take you deeper and deeper into the imaginative world of the most diverse nocturnal (and sometimes also childlike) moods and feelings. The journey ends early in the morning with Schumann's first "Song of the Early" from op. 133, which gives a glimpse of the sunrise...
The pieces are throughout mostly quiet, calming and therefore very relaxing. Only every now and then there are some louder interruptions and short agitated moments. The different styles and tonal languages of the composers make this compilation nevertheless varied and colorful. I hope you enjoy this music and my interpretations and will enjoy this little "Dream Journey" again and again.
Tip for listening: To enjoy the nuances and moods, I recommend listening to this music in the evening in a quiet, slightly darkened room or by candlelight. The dynamic range of many pieces is very large. Don't be surprised if it sometimes gets very quiet, for example: Especially with the berceuses, some composers (e.g. Grieg) deliberately go to the lower limit of what is audible by prescribing triple piano ppp (= "piano pianissimo", i.e. extremely quiet) for entire passages - which is by the way a much greater challenge for a pianist than playing loud! On the other hand, it often gets very loud at tension peaks. So set a medium volume.
