In two years, Derry-based duo RIOT CODE have followed a meteoric rise as an internationally recognised producer-DJ outfit. The pair behind the project, Oliver and Stephen, developed their alias during lockdowns in 2020 to produce music on their own terms and form a signature, knife-edged sound. Armed with a wealth of unreleased music and a hunger for world domination post-pandemic, RIOT CODE delivered a slew of self-releases, captivating artists and industry heads alike.
Following their sold-out debut EP "Tripwire" released on vinyl via Scottish label Carouse Records in 2021, the release acted as a smoking gun for the techno realm—RIOT CODE are here, get used to it.
Receiving support from VTSS, DAX J, Nico Moreno, SPFDJ, Kettama, IMOGEN, Partiboi69, Alan Fitzpatrick, Rebūke and many more, RIOT CODE's unreleased jams popped off worldwide. Several artists supported their music, including Paula Temple at Awakenings, Kobosil at Tomorrowland, AIROD at Dour Festival and Partiboi69, further amplifying RIOT CODE's profile as galvanised techno machines.
Production-wise, 2022 was RIOT CODE's breakout year. They released their industrial techno EP "The Summoning" on 9999999999's imprint NineTimesNine, offering a firm introduction to those who were yet to be acquainted with RIOT CODE. Releases on established labels like Paula Temple's Noise Manifesto, DYEN's Reckless and AIROD's Elixyr followed suit, complemented by plays on BBC Radio 1.
In the same year, debut and sold-out shows shaped RIOT CODE's schedule, joining the likes of Giant Swan, Sunil Sharpe and KlangKuenstler along the way. Bookings spanning Belfast, Berlin, Dublin, Glasgow, Lithuania, and a headline tour of Australia helped RIOT CODE grow a global following.
2023 marks the release of RIOT CODE's highly anticipated EP "4EVER" via New York-based label Homage. It's a love letter to their hometown of Derry, Ireland, with BBC Radio 1's Jaguar premiering the trance-flecked track "Uncivil Jungle" as part of the station's Pride Month Special last year. While writing ''4EVER'', one-half of RIOT CODE was dealing with emotions due to their ongoing transitioning journey and a lack of support and resources available in the Northern Ireland sector for Trans people. The visceral, hard-hitting melodies on "4EVER" encapsulate this vulnerable period, but resilient as ever, the pair channelled the experience into a storied body of work.
Other projects include a remix of ElyiE's track "I See UR Face" on Echo Recordings and a remix of AZYR's track "Direct To The Roof". The latter—due to drop in March—has received exclusive plays from 999999999, Shlomo, Hadone, Paula Temple and Amelie Lens, resulting in a frenzy of track ID requests.
Upcoming shows include a headline Scottish tour, a stint in Paris and a well-earned slot for the nomadic European collective Blackworks. Last year, RIOT CODE fulfilled a last-minute booking for Dublin's INDEX party and sold out within minutes; an all-night set for INDEX is now in the works. Future festivals include a return to EMERGE, Belfast, after ramming out the techno tent last summer, and Life in Westmeath. RIOT CODE will embark on another headline tour of Australia and complete the year with shows in Asia and the USA.
