KINGFISH LEVINSKY (2021) by Michael Schelle published on 2021-01-31T16:00:51Z Michael Schelle KINGFISH LEVINSKY (2021) - for oboe, tenor sax and piano ("Kingfish Levinsky" is also available for soprano sax, tenor sax and piano) Written for the Gail Levinsky Trio Program note: The piece is a reverse snapshot biopic of flamboyant boxer Kingfish Levinsky. A ranked heavyweight prizefighter in the 1930s, Kingfish Levinsky (1910-1991) battled the likes of Jack Dempsey, Max Baer, Joe Lewis, Max Schmeling and Jack Sharkey. For a portion of his career, Levinsky was managed by his sister Lena Kraków. Known as "Leapin' Lena", she was a colorful character who swore like a sailor, and rooted loudly for her brother during his bouts. After retiring from prizefighting, Levinsky moved briefly to the "professional wrestling" circuit (conjuring up the tragic images of the finale of Rod Serling's "Requiem for a Heavyweight"). Most remember Levinsky as the punch drunk old ex-prizefighter selling cigars, ties and watches in front of his sister's fish market on Maxwell Street in Chicago. Levinsky was married to erotic fan dancer Roxanna Sand (in the photo) for just six weeks in 1934. _____________________________________________________________ www.schellemusic.com . Genre Classical
