FEAR AND LOATHING IN THE CARTHUSIAN MONASTERY AT VALLDEMOSSA (2022) by Michael Schelle published on 2022-07-14T00:15:02Z Michael Schelle FEAR AND LOATHING IN THE CARTHUSIAN MONASTERY AT VALLDEMOSSA (2022) - version for two pianos (three players) and chamber ensemble - clarinet, doublebass (and tenor sax, accordion, percussion arrive on stage 1/2 way thru the piece) Program note: In 1838, suffering from ill health aggravated by tuberculosis, Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) was spirited away to the Carthusian Monastery at Valldemossa by his mistress / lover / companion, author George Sand (Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dudevant) - but the weather was unseasonably cold, the castle was damp and drafty (and "haunted"), Chopin's fragile condition only worsened. All this triggered a most unpleasant stay, Chopin accomplished very little music and the two emotional powder kegs (mired in anxiety, aggression and bitterness) argued the entire time, tensions continuously escalating. A few years later, Chopin would dump Sand in favor of Sand's own 18-year old daughter, Solange.
