Richard's music career began as a chorister at Gloucester Cathedral. His instrumental and choral works have been performed by musicians on both sides of the Atlantic, recorded on CD and published.
He received his South Bank debut in 2001 with his work 8 'til Late for 8 hands on 2 pianos. This work was later included on the 2003 CD by Piano40 (Regent Records) and featured in an article in the Observer on Sunday.
His work Cave Paintings was recorded in Canada by the group Ephyra for their debut CD Modern Standards the same year that Michael Varner, professor of percussion at The University of Texas, Arlington, premiered Susvar for solo marimba. Susvar has since been toured by Michael.
In 2006 he was commissioned by The Cheltenham Bach Choir to write a work for their Gloucestershire Composers concert. Venues have included The Dome, Brighton, Arundel Cathedral, Chichester Cathedral (a thirty minute work for orchestra and chorus to mark the millennium), Gloucester Cathedral, The South Bank Centre, the Millennium Dome, The Banff Centre, Canada, The University of Texas, Arlington, USA, Chichester University, The Anvil, Basingstoke, The Assembly Hall, Worthing and others.....
In 2010 his micro-opera Maybe I'm you, I'm not myself was performed in London by Warehouse Opera. Richard has recently completed compositions connected with works of art. The Annunciation by American artist John Collier was one such project.
Another artist whose work has inspired Richard is Eric James Mellon. Eric's Circus Prints are the focus of a new piece, Circus! for oboe, violin and piano, composed for the launch of Eric's new book 'Sixty five years of printmaking'.
2013 saw Richard return to the South Bank in April, and his New York debut with Bucca. He also travelled to Düsseldorf with the ensemble Piano40 for a performance of 8 'til Late in May. In October Richard's work This Marvellous Machine was performed at The Wigmore Hall, London. Richard completed the 20 minute collaborative work Edge of the World with artists and writers in 2014 and finished the year off with the premiere of 3 Advent Antiphons, written in memory of Sir John Tavener.
