Rhythm Hunters are a dynamite force in world roots music; dramatic, charismatic and outside the box. Infectious multi-instrumentalist Rendra Freestone brings blood inspiration from Sumatra, Indonesia. From traditional origins to full blown a contemporary band, Rhythm Hunters brings its culture to the stage with horns, bass, electronics, synths, Asian flute and jaw-dropping physical drum choreographies.
Striking artistry and percussive precision influenced by Indonesian seated dances and Japanese taiko is a signature part of this act. Combined with beats, enchanting melodies, multi-lingual lyrics and cleverly crafted dance grooves, the sound could be described as edgy, smooth, tribal, frenetic, organic, soulful, esoteric, beautiful and distinctly Australasian.
The resume includes Woodford Folk, National Folk, Island Vibe, Mullumbimby, Cygnet, The Dreaming, National Multicultural, Subsonic, Peats Ridge, Psyfari, Moomba; The Sydney Opera House, Parliament House and for Carols in the Domain for over 100,000 people. Opening for Nicky Bomba, Nahko and Medicine for the People, Oka, Circle of Rhythm and hosting guests such as Greg Sheehan, Riley Lee, Afro Moses, Sandy Evans and Si Mullumby (Wild Marmalade) is testimony to the respect given from the Australian music community.
With backgrounds from Indonesia, PNG, Indigenous Australia and Europe, Rhythm Hunters continue to traverse cultural sound-scapes and dance music of the future.
