Reinier van Harten
Here is REINDIER!
Take one part pop, a dash of folk, a spoonful of electronica, a whiff of theatre and an ample portion of emotion, shake asymmetrically and there you have it: a new sound. Melancholic vocals, experimental instruments and confronting lyrics; that is REINDIER. When he is in the mood to sing, he does not avoid any topic, ranging from childhood nostalgia to tangled manly love. On stage is where he shows you his most vulnerable side and where he will give you his best. REINDIER makes his audience laugh, enjoy, reflect, forget and occasionally let them shed a little, glittery tear.
Who is REINDIER?
REINDIER is musician Reinier van Harten from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Born in 1991 in a picturesque village in the south of Holland, he learns to play the piano and guitar at a very young age. Inspired by his piano teacher Izak Boom, he starts to compose his own songs. At the age of 18, Reinier moves to the city of Tilburg to attend the Rock Academy. This is where he forms his first band: Puppa and the Clementines, an eccentric bunch that combines theatre and drama with poppy yet inventive music.
Two years later, Reinier moves to the capital to study at the highly acclaimed Conservatory of Amsterdam. Mingling w the creative creatures of Amsterdam’s exhilarating nightlife, he finds new inspiration for his music. He writes about accomplished ladies that pursue secret fetishes for sexual satisfaction. And about drag queens that thrive in wild underground parties, yet fear setting foot into the less tolerant world outside.
Influenced by the poetic lyrics of Bob Dylan, the passionate videos of Kate Bush and the dreamy mysteries of Björk, Reinier has created his own mystical world filled with music, visuals and dance. REINDIER is his first solo project, in which he composes and sings, while accompanying himself on piano and synthesizer. Carlos Della-Fiore produces the tracks and joins REINDIER live on stage by adding intriguing electronic layers.
What is REINDIER?
Stimulated by the constantly shifting views and desires of mankind, REINDIER explores the boundaries of our existence. Our world is full of contrasts: high and low, in and out or hot and cold are contradictions that seem self-evident. But what about antonyms like male and female, young and old or reality versus fantasy? Are those boundaries as neatly defined as they seem; is the world really that orderly?
In our modern society we are free of religion and superstition and are guided by logic and ratio. We live in a system with a sharp pecking order and a clear division of roles according to well-defined labels. But what about the human beings that cannot be pigeonholed? Are those people the sinners of society, the lepers of the planet? Not at all. They provide the much needed and exciting stir in our blatantly rational world.
Behind the stark contrasts and oppressive stereotypes of our society hides a universe full of enchantment and fairytales. This is where REINDIER finds the inspiration for his music. Vive la diversité!
What does REINDIER create?
Freaky songs, like Cold Love. A song about the cruelty of loving someone so badly that it kills all of your moral values. bit.ly/coldlove
Dark songs, like Control Me. About the perils of the woods, dominated by animals that influence the psyche of human intruders, causing them to do things they have never done before. bit.ly/controlme
Melancholic songs, like Tree Roots. Everyone occasionally reminisces about their childhood. Your father reading you bedtime stories or your mother caring for yet another wounded knee. An ode to parental guidance and the strength one can draw from one’s roots. bit.ly/treeroots
Dreamy songs, like Clear The Haze. Imagine you could shut off the outside world by simply closing your eyes to float away in your own imagination. bit.ly/clearthehaze
