REGGAE MUSIC EP - EARL 16, MANASSEH & MUNGO'S HIFI
REGGAE ROAST RECORDS | CATALOGUE NO: RR006
Reggae Roast Records are proud to present the Reggae Music EP. This highly anticipated record is taken from the forthcoming ‘Lick It Back!’ compilation album, which is scheduled for release in June this year. The album features the most exciting artists in the scene, with an all killer, no filler track selection. The Reggae Music EP is a 4 track 12” vinyl & digital release and follows the critically acclaimed Righteous EP - February 2011, which received 8/10 in DJ Magazine and ”Connected the dots between traditional reggae and UK Bass” - XLR8R. Recent releases on Reggae Roast Records have been well received by national radio and club DJs alike, with multiple plays on Radio 1, 1Xtra, Kiss 100 and Rinse FM.
The Reggae Music EP is set to follow suit with its infectious energy and cross-genre appeal. The title track is destined for heavy rotations as we approach the summer months, while the hard hitting dubstep remix, rattles chest cavities of unsuspecting ravers across the globe. The original mix is a perfectly formed slice of new, British roots reggae, with it’s catchy hook and up-tempo rhythm.
Earl 16’s lyrics comment on the current vitality of reggae music, which was once dismissed by some with the loss of many of its legendary originators. Nick Manasseh’s riddim track & dub mix, hark back to the sweet sounds of Jamaica, while his crisp production values and modern clarity, highlight the strength of the current global resurgence of roots reggae. Mungo’s Hi Fi have really gone to town on the dubstep re-working, which possesses a much tougher edge, built to test the mightiest of speaker boxes. Overall this release demonstrates, over 30s years since its creation, reggae music cant be refused and is consistently re-born with every new season of producers and vocal talents.
Earl 16 has become one of the most revered Reggae singers of his generation. He has been an integral part of the industry since leaving school to follow his passion as a recording artist at the Legendary Studio 1. He has worked with the crème de la crème of producers in both Jamaica and Europe. He is a foundation Jamaican singer and has been releasing top quality recordings with a variety of producers including; Linval Thompson, Lee Scratch Perry, Augustus Pablo, Clement Dodd & Sugar Minott since the mid 1970’s. In the 1990s he made guest appearances on tracks by Leftfield and is currently touring as the live front man for the band.
Nick Manasseh began producing music for sound system exclusives around 1986 and after hooking up with Scruff Guilder in 1987 became known for works under the guise; Sound Iration in Dub. Their first single “Seventh Seal” was cut in 1988 and became a big hit on the UK roots scene and was widely credited with being the first new wave UK dub track. In February 1987 after Nick Manasseh returned from a trip to Jamaica loaded up with a selection of dub plates from King Tubbys studio, he went on to host a seminal weekly radio show on Kiss fm. Manasseh’s show helped to create the climate for today’s roots Scene with new artists like Luciano, Sizzla and Garnet Silk becoming massively popular; as well as huge interest being generated in revival roots music.
Mungo’s Hi Fi, hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, emerged from humble beginnings in the year 2000. Since then they have grown to become the UK’s number one reggae sound system. They take everything you and I love about traditional roots, dancehall, dub and reggae vibes and bring them bang up to date in their own imitable style. Their reputation and profile have soared in recent years, garnering support from the likes of taste makers such as; John Peel and Mr Scruff resulting in their smash hit ‘Ing’ featuring on the ‘Keep It Solid Steel’ LP from Ninja Tune.
