JUNO RECORDS REVIEW
There's something pleasingly old-fashioned about this debut full-length from Italian producer Emilliano Pennisi. It's not that it sounds particularly dated - the sounds and production techniques he employs are strictly contemporary - but Broken Antenna's adventurous eclecticism evokes a period when electronic producers were not afraid to pack their albums with a variety of sounds and styles. Taking a deep house sensibility as its starting point, Broken Antenna variously touches on off-kilter electronic disco, cinematic electronica, jazz-flecked beats, glistening synth-pop, curious tech-house, muted electro-swing and even glossy Italian house. While it may be lacking the "wow" factor, it's certainly an accomplished and highly entertaining set.
MARCO FEBBRARO REVIEW [head of Strictly Groove Recordings]
Took just two bars since between me and Avenir was love at first sight. I mean love for his music obviously! Actually Avenir is especially a very deep person, key for me, the more so in the role of Strictly Groove's manager, and his passion is magically reflected in things in generaland with an infinite echo in its productions. Broken Antenna is the debut album of Avenir. Eleven tracks that are based on a constant up and down, full of emotions and sensations with which Avenir approaches to his vision of the world. "Make Up" the latest single, "To Skip!" and "Incorrect Usage" among others, show an original and significant attraction for dance music, where he's rooted himself. While "594", "Bye" and "Epilogue De Arnis", for example, reveal to us the more romantic side and his desire to move, being able to do so, passing through dark and worrying atmospheres. Finally, when I asked Avenir, the meaning of the title Broken Antenna, he explained that he can't forget the times when listened to his father's shortwaves radio, and in particular certain local programs in which they passed everything, even improbable recipes of how to cook the fish. Well, I think if you ask an artist to something about his latest work and he candidly answers you, talking about things that are apparently not connected, you understand that its exploration has gone intimately far beyond the music. Then read the notes that Avenir's wanted to use to implement the tracklist and realize that there's a parallel research, which is instead the result of a methodology, a technique, since Avenir is technical expert too.
I don't want you expect from this album something transcendental, so different from the rest. The grandeur of this record is its simplicity, it's linearity we find also in the photos and visual concept, which accompanies it. This record is a thrilling journey that you have always dreamed of. Its itself a skillful traveler who knows how to take you by hand in this adventure.
