Music, at a point in the not-so-distant past, was not only a medium of expression and celebration but it was our window to a world that we had largely be shut out of and could not afford to ever explore. Music was the one news channel that we could trust, it was the soundtrack to our lives and a blueprint to our freedom.
That era in music and creativity is what I am influenced by. It didn't matter how many records they had sold, how many names were in their liner notes, or how expensive their accessories, it was about a vibe. The days when a song gave you that feeling in your stomach, so strong that all you could do was laugh and announce to the world, "that's my song!"
Since too young to remember, I have had an unquenchable thirst for sound. I grew up singing in choirs, and then went on to play the trumpet, baritone and guitar in my middle school and high school bands. My passion and love of all things musical has taken me to the other side of the world, and for that, I am truly grateful.
Although predominately influenced by the the Blues, Soul Music, and Jazz, I found HipHop made it possible to blend the best of all worlds. Because it takes elements from various aspects of music and brings them together, it was as if I could have Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, John Coltrane, Sade, Public Enemy and the Sugar Hill Gang all sitting in a room together, and then have a conversation over the music about whatever was going on in my world. Not only could I connect with other people's heart, but I could connect there's to mine, and likewise, share our struggles and perspectives. The various ethnic and cultural influences in my art is not only evident in the sound of my music, which is also heavily influenced by Flamenco and Ethiopian Jazz, but also in the lyrical content. Even if the song is about partying or making love, I try to share insights.
Though I have always been a writer, my introduction to the music scene began as a promoter and graphic artist. Along with my brother Ramel Jasir, in 2005, I co-founded an arts collective called "The Renaissance Entertainment and Management Group." The Renaissance dealt with artist management and development, event planning, event management and basically trying to throw the freshest HipHop parties around.
"Soul of a Generation" was it's not-for-profit mechanism that was meant to capture the essence of all of the elements of arts and culture, and add on a healthy dose of Knowledge for the community, as well. Soul of a Generation was meant to capture the spirit of the documentarian, the storyteller, the teacher, the explorer, even the mathematician, and philosopher. Renaissance is the body, S.O.G is the heart and soul.
