Joy Lynn Davis - "Remembering the Lost" by Rangjung Yeshe Institute published on 2016-10-06T03:32:43Z The talk was entitled "Remembering the Lost: Community Response to the Theft of Kathmandu’s Sacred Sculptures" Thousands of sacred sculptures have been stolen from the Kathmandu Valley and while they are admired as works of art in museums and private collections around the world, their communities mourn the loss of them as living gods. Artist and researcher Joy Lynn Davis documents community response to the thefts through paintings, photographs, interviews, and research she began while studying at RYI. Her exhibitions and outreach activities aim to increase public awareness of the cultural significance of these sculptures and the problem of illicit trafficking of art, in order to ultimately decrease the market and encourage returns. In this talk she will share her project and current challenges, raise questions, and welcome feedback and ideas. She spoke with students at RYI on 20th September, 2016.
