Ramin Roshandel - composer, setār player Ramin Roshandel Iowa City My composition work is based around incorporating ‘experience’ as a fundamental concept although through a non-experimental approach in performance. Considering phenomena such as instability, cultural identity, and communicational language on one hand, and being inspired by Iranian music microtones as a setār (an Iranian instrument) player on the other, lead me to consider indeterminate, improvisatory, and abstract structures in my music in contrast, or alongside post- or non-tonal organizations. I'm currently a PhD candidate in the Composition program at the University of Iowa, where I've studied under Josh Levine and Sivan Cohen-Elias and am currently working with David Gompper. Got an M.Mus. in Composition from the University of Tehran under Amin Honarmand and Amir Tafreshipour and a B.A. in Iranian Music Performance from Tehran University of Art. As a sétār player, I have worked with Mohammad Reza Lotfi, Hamid Sokouti, and Farshid Jam. I have two papers on Hossein Alizadeh’s Neynavâ and Elliott Carter’s Dialogues published in Persian journals.
