Romancing the Gibbet by Ralph Hoyte published on 2017-07-13T21:36:03Z ROMANCING THE GIBBET Credits and Acknowledgements These tracks are samples from the 'ROMANCING THE GIBBET' app made for the Regional History Centre of the University of the West of England by SATSYMPH . The audio app (with on-screen background information from authentic sources) takes you, the listener, on 4 different 'crime-scene execution walks' through the Georgian West Country. 'A crime-scene execution' was the occasional and extraordinary 18th and early 19th century practice of hanging and sometimes gibbeting selected felons (exhibiting their bodies to public view in iron cages) at the scene of their crime. It was intended to leave an indelible and exemplary impression on disorderly villages and small towns. These spectacular, expensive and processional events were usually staged on high (so everyone could get a good view) and in remote liminal locations outside the town boundaries. The defendant’s last sight on earth would be a seething mass of humanity – many thousands attended these gruesome events – and, symbolically, he or she would have a good view of where the crime was committed. The people involved in the making of the 'Romancing the Gibbet' app are: Steve Poole - Professor of History and Heritage, Director, Regional History Centre, UWE Ralph Hoyte - Concept, Script & Project Management, SATSYMPH Michael Fairfax - Music & FX Phill Phelps - Sound design, sound recording & app, SATSYMPH Alan Coveney - voice Ralph Hoyte - voice The Roaring Trowmen - Sea shanty Stefan Hoyte - Piano Particular thanks to Andy Doran (whistle), his son Jon Doran (fiddle), and Gwilym Davis (melodeon) of the Campden Morrismen for recording a piece for me to use. for TOPS DOWN (The Morrismen Murder).
