J.C. Scheid is a musician born and raised in sunny San Diego and currently based in (possibly sunnier) Long Beach. He enjoys the literature of Lewis Carrol and Michael Crichton, has a tremendous love for huskies, and is a master at cooking eggs and other breakfast foods.
Justin would like to describe himself as a Long Beach based composer, performer, producer, and concert technician (in no particular order). He graduated from California State University Long Beach, finished his Master's Degree in Music Composition at CalArts.
As a producer and concert technician , Scheid has worked with artists across various mediums to put on events and artistic works. Along with composer Edward Park, he co-founded and co-produced the Long Beach late night concert series ¿conVoke!, and since has worked in producing various concerts and events. He is also a co-founder and member of the art and music event group GypsyCollective.
As a composer Justin enjoys a broad spectrum of musical genres, and often collaborates with other artistic mediums and performing artists to produce larger works. He recently provided music for Sophia Stoller's dance work Siren, marking their third major collaboration. He also composed music in collaboration with Sarah Belle Reid for Murmuration, a large scale organically grown work for trumpet, live electronics, percussion, dance, and live projection and lighting. For his own musical output Justin enjoys composing music for acoustic instruments and electronics, often mixing the two together. Such pieces include Anamnesis for electric guitar and way too much reverb, Vertical for trumpet and reactive Max/MSP, and Melodia for melodica and laptop. His purely acoustic works often employ either open instrumentations or "massed" families of instruments, such as Slow Piece for five or more pianos or keyboard instruments, Blossom Piece for surrounding Balinese galmelan, and Tree Piece for 10 or more instruments. Notable electronic works include Wild Roar (fixed media), just passing thru (fixed media), and Autumn Mix for microphones, monitors, and house speakers.
Scheid studied flute with Dr. John Barcellona and composition with Dr. Alan Shockley while at CSU Long Beach. At CalArts, he studied composition with Michael Jon Fink, Ulrich Krieger, and Michael Pisaro. Also while at CalArts, he studied North Indian music under Ustad Aashish Khan, and Balinese Gamelan Gong Keybar and suling with I Nyoman Wenton.
