'We need to secure the livelihoods of farmers," says NGO at key UN climate summit by RFI published on 2019-09-23T15:51:09Z As world leaders gather in New York for a key UN climate summit aimed at reversing runaway climate change, African countries are calling on their partners to declare a climate emergency. Two deadly cyclones this year, cost the lives of thousands of people in southern Africa, whilst severe drought has left some 27 million people without food. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has admitted that the world is losing the fight against climate change, however, civil society organisations in Africa are fighting back and resisting. One such group is the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa. Based in Kenya, the group works across 11 countries in Africa to help governments prioritize small holder farmers. Its president, Dr Agnes Kalibata, told RFI's Christina Okello, that Monday's summit will be "a moment of truth".
