This alone – this unchosen flood of triggering information, and the potential effects of it all – is a too-much-ness that can leave us looping. Looping in hypervigiliance, in a half-here-ness, in anxiety, fight, flight, grief, shame. When we start to loop in these emergency responses, our higher level cognition goes hazy, including our capacity to remember our choices, our possibilities and our creativity. Lord knows we need choice, possibility and creativity right now. Otherwise, the momentum of emergency wins. We collapse in depression, dissociation, illness, exhaustion or grief until the NEXT collective trauma is triggered, and there we are looping again.
