I am Rachel. I like to listen. I like to dance.
I started listening to DISCO as a small child, playing my Mum's Saturday Night Fever album over and over again. Dancing in the lounge to tracks like "popcorn" and "crazy horses". From age 11, I really got into PRINCE in a big way. 1989 I turned on a student radio show and heard ACID HOUSE for the first time. I was 14. I was hooked. 1990 I started going to raves - I was 15. 808's were exciting me. I started going to a nightclub called Alfies and danced to disco, house, hip hop and rave.
Then I discovered The BOX nightclub and fell in-love with the DJ. Many nights on the floor until dawn and working the door. Me and the DJ (Rob SALMON) escaped from NZ to NYC where I lived for 3 years in Hotel 17. Feb 1996, my 1st night in NYC and I saw The Bucket Heads perform "The Bomb" live at Vinyl nightclub. Some of the best DJ's I saw in NYC were Armand Van Helden, Afrika Bambaata, Danny Tenaglia, Junior Vasquez, Francois Kervorkian, Carl Craig, Masters at Work. I got a job working for ASTRALWERKS RECORDINGS and had the pleasure of working on The Chemical Brothers, AIR, Massive Attack, Photek, Cassius and Fatboy Slim (among others). I boogied down at clubs like The Limelight, TWILO, VINYL, THE TUNNEL, Centrofly, ROXY. Left NYC after 3 years and moved to London. Worked for MTV and then as a DJ booker for Subliminal (Eric Morillo, Richard F, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Jose Nunez) and also Darren Emmerson, Futureshock and Yousef. Then worked for Virgin Records and then EMI. Hit clubs like Ministry of Sound, The End, Velvet, Home, Fabric, The Social etc. Gary Kemp from 80's band Spandau Ballet matched me up with my husband and together we moved to NZ in 2004 and here I am. A woman. A mother. And music lover. Not working in music at present, but would love to for the right thing. Now I dance in my lounge with my kids x... who know's what's next.
