Freak folk is a genre of folk music associated with contemporary artists such as Animal Collective, Davenport, Devendra Banhart, CocoRosie, Panda Bear, Kelli Ali, Joanna Newsom, Vetiver, Bowerbirds, Greg Weeks, Hecuba, Akron/Family, Rio en Medio, Sufjan Stevens, Sean Hayes, and The Dodos, and with artists of the 1960s and 1970s such as Holy Modal Rounders, The Incredible String Band, The Godz and The Fugs.
Freak folk draws from traditional folk music and uses mainly acoustic instrumentation, but introduces elements of avant-garde music and psychedelic folk, often featuring uncommon sounds, themes, and vocal styles.
I personally don't think of it as a negative sort of "freak"... it's like the sort of freak you love... the good weird, you know? :)

Freak folk: "Freak folk draws from traditional folk music and uses mainly acoustic instrumentation, but introduces elements of avant-garde music, baroque pop and psychedelic folk, often featuring uncommon sounds, themes, and vocal styles."
Art music: (or serious music, or erudite music) is an umbrella term used to refer to musical traditions implying advanced structural and theoretical considerations and a written musical tradition. The notion of art music is a frequent and well defined musicological distinction, e.g. referred to by musicologist Philip Tagg as an "axiomatic triangle consisting of 'folk', 'art' and 'popular' musics." He explains that each of these three is distinguishable from the others according to certain criteria. In this regard, it is frequently used as a contrasting term to popular music and traditional or folk music... which is why this group is not based only in "Art music"... elements of traditional folk are certainly welcome and encouraged... as long as its vocals done in an interesting way, its good here!!
Original experimental instrumental
with electronic influences, or
just raw instrumentation of
any sort; lightly moderated
All music experimental, different and original, created by unorthodox means.
Lo fi scrappy music for the record-it-in-20-minute generation. Please add in anything you've done that's lo-fi and scrappy and generally a bit bluurgh. Don't add in swanky, well produced tracks that you've poured over for hours and are brilliant. We're looking for raw, amateur Daniel Johnson type stuff, not Daniel Beddingfield.
Tracks don't have to be rubbish but don't worry if they are. Revel in it.
UPDATE: I've been getting complaints that people are submitting tracks that aren't really lo-fi bedroom-tastic recordings at all. So I might have to axe a few songs if they're clearly 3 month projects by electronic knob twiddlers.
No offence to anyone creating music, all of it is to be commended, but this group needs to be focused to a degree otherwise it becomes pointless in its existence. Got a problem with the group? Then stick it in the discussion area or message me on here yo.
This group is intended for all those tracks that just don't fit anywhere else. They defy genres and styles and exist in some outsider's world where definitions and labels crumble into chaos!
