Ive been involved with techno for nearly 20 years. Ive just started my own free digital label, Anti Gasmask Techno Militia. Each release will feature 4 tracks from 4 different artists all under one name.
I have a radio show, BREAK, on Fnoob Techno Radio showcasing the best in new, unsigned and up and coming techno artists and labels that airs every 4th Wednesday 8-10pm uk time.
After growing up listening to punk, varying from the Pistols to Crass, Conflict to Bauhaus, following the pre Nirvana bands of England around the country, New Model Army, Crazyhead, Claytown Troupe and the Levellers, the chemical generation arrived with me and my mates in full effect. Listening to different types of dance music for a while but not really knowing what i wanted all changed when i was given a copy of Jeff Mills at the Liquid rooms, i was blown away, techno was the way forward. Then after going to Lost in London to see Hawtin and Mills together, i knew what i wanted.
My first dj set was a laugh at a night called Family, opening for Subhead and Dave Saunders 1997, a night we hardly advertised but done three sold out nights. Then i got asked to play last set of the night at Release in Portsmouth, a near sold out night ended with me being asked to be a resident, that lasted for a year or so, and also on the same night being asked to open for Surgeon at the now legendary Geushky night.
During my residency at Release i played alongside the likes of Trevor Rockcliffe, Colin Favour, Brenda Russell and Aubrey, while also guesting at Geushky with Surgeon, Dave Clarke, Dave Angel and the Advent, not forgetting the two residents Ian Void and Dave Saunders who i played the New Years Eve Geushky parties with.
As the millenium came and went so did my love for techno, things had changed.....not for the better, me and techno parted company. I got married and started a family. Then after discovering Soundcloud and a host of new artists doing new things and trying to break away from the money grabbing old guard, i begged borrowed and stole 20 tracks to do a mix with, my first venture into the digital world, something very foreign to me. I put the mix up on my Soundcloud page and got hold of all the artists to let them know i had used their tracks, something i still do out of courtesy. i got a great response and an email from the then boss at Fnoob Techno radio, Daz Furey offering me a two hour slot came along, the chance to get the unknown artists heard. I had nothing to lose.
The show, called Break, originally started on a Sunday night, an hour from me and an hour from a guest, gained a great following, the listeners love of relentless techno and the fact they knew i had spent ages getting the tracks from new, unsigned and up and coming artists and labels made the show a firm favourite each month on a Sunday night.
In the meantime i was busy writing tracks, something that i really enjoyed, i had tracks signed to Corrupt Systems and Viral Outbreak Digital, remixes signed to Anecdote and Wired Room Records.
The loss of a great friend and the person who taught me about techno, Dave Saunders, made me stop the radio show for a while, but after constant harassment from the Fnoob management (in a good way) i decided to re start the show on a Wednesday, same format, just the guest first then me second, that way i could play harder and faster.
In the last year ive got back to gigging again, Daves Tribute night with Ian Void my first gig for 10 years led to and old friend DJ LP asking me to play alongside Billy Nasty at his Perforate night in Portsmouth, a superb night with people travelling from all over the country. Now into 2014 and i have a few gigs lined up in Belfast, London and Bristol, if you like what i do get in contact and book me :)
