Rain bird and time bird by Poetry Scores published on 2013/01/16 07:18:28 +0000 This is a traditional Grebo story song translated from Grebo and performed by Nymah Kumah. It was recorded by Elijah "Lij" Shaw and myself at an old brick church in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Nymah, now deceased, was from the bush Grebo who had been living in the interior of what became Liberia long before the U.S. created Liberia on the coast of West Africa. As Nymah told us, "We are a Stone Age people." "Rain Bird and Time Bird" is a distinctly West African courtship narrative, where it's all about how hard the suitor is willing to work -- as judged by his in-laws. * Rain bird image borrowed from www.rodwellhouse.co.za.
