The creation of: Best For You (Feat. Estef)

I knew I was on to something special when I first started this track in my freshman year dorm room. It started with the keys, then I played live drums and bass guitar to construct the beat and it stayed on my laptop for sometime until I opened it back up about a year later. Early 2016 I got in the studio in Nashville with my close friends and extremely talented collaborators @itsestef and @callaway-martin to sit down and co-write over the demo instrumental. The story of Best For You is based off of real stories that estef, callaway and I were going though at the time. Young love, breakup and the idea of loving someone but knowing that letting them go is for the best. (best for you)

Estef absolutely killed the vocal performance on our favorite microphone (a sony c-800g) and I couldn’t imagine any one else singing on this song but her. Once we were done with recording vocals, we were excited but I knew that it was missing something…..live brass. That night I composed a two part harmony for a trumpet and trombone and the next day I called my friend Drew Lombana to come play trombone and a session trumpet player to come in record.

Funny story about the trumpet player….he flaked out 10 minutes before the session was starting! Last minute the engineer called his "trumpet friend that goes to Vanderbilt” to come in and play on the record. That’s when I met one of the most talented trumpet players in the world, Olivia Gilmore . Olivia told me when we started the session that she never had recorded in a studio before but it didn’t matter. I jammed with her until she nailed the perfect trumpet solo over the outro of the record. That was the icing on the cake.

Over the last year I have done probably 40 mixes on this record, tweaking every track until it is absolutely perfect. I mixed it back home in Atlanta, tweaked it while living in Melbourne, Australia and finished the final mix in my studio back in Nashville.

Over the summer Estef, my mangers, Daniel & Parker and I were in LA (making some amazing music you’ll hear soon) and I flew out the super talented photographer Devin Brewster from NYC to come shoot the album artwork at the Pink Motel, in north Los Angeles. Devin captured the prefect photo of Estef and I that told the story of the song in one frame, thank you dude.

This song was a huge learning experience for me. Collaboration is everything and I could not have done this all by myself. Special thanks to everyone involved and all the homies that came thru the studio that day: Matt Baratz , Jarrod and KVR . Thank you cyrus at @wearebigbeat for believing in me and getting this track signed.

Best for You is personally my favorite song I've ever made. There is just something special about the creation of it that I will never let go of. It's a transitional type of record that shows the world I'm not just a soundcloud beatmaker.....I'm a writer, a producer, a multi-instrumentalist, a composer and a taste maker.
