Piel Music is Life
Los Angeles
Amidst shades of crimson spilled from red and amber light bulbs, ushered and imbibed by even sweeter red wine, a subtle sound machine chimes in the background of a dark wood Victorian den where hidden stereo speakers sound the words
“I don’t mind if all that’s wonderful is buried under what we assume; keep telling me, to lose myself, to be set free…”
PIEL’s lead singer, Tiki Lewis, conveys the band’s essence delivering such lyrics in a sultry yet vulnerable urgent voice in the song “Speakers”. Their electro clash, dance rock hit “Studio 54 (Contagious)” is contrasted by their moodier Blonde Redhead/Duran Duran tinged “Babble On”. The experimental punk anthem “Suck This Attitude” belies the nature of their Cocteau Twins/Verve shoegazer cut “Rise and Fall”. PIEL has been luring even the most skeptical wallflowers onto the dance floor at local Los Angeles venues from The Crash Mansion and The Hive art gallery to Hollywood’s The Key Club and The Whisky opening up for Berlin, Vast as well as Wu Tang’s Ghostface Killah and Killah Priest.
Lewis, a South Side Chicago native, steeped in flowing spirit transmissions and an array of 80's pop influences, grew up performing in various clubs in her hometown. Her delicate whispers flow seamlessly into undeniable, hummable hooks and full-blown cathartic roars while mesmerizing audiences and igniting souls.
Her hook writing gifts proved even more powerful when she joined forces on the west coast. PIEL being a temple and vehicle for Lewis's mantra's, is supported by diverse pillars of accomplished musicians that epitomizes the rich city of artists that Los Angeles is known for. Natives of L.A.'s buzzing musical underground, co-founders of Woven (Interscope Records), Jonathan Burkes (bass/vocal/production) and Steve Abagon (guitar/sonic alchemist) forged a unique style and language of music all their own that lead them to other creative honors such as Burke’s fronting That Noise and Abagon’s touring with Perry Farrell and Rickie Lee Jones. That Noise/Paper Pills drummer, Kenny Ramirez (drums) and Fire at Play’s Chris Lopez (keyboard) bring the backbone to Piel’s driving rhythm section. Rounding out the sound with meticulous crafted electronic beats, searing synths and guitar atmospherics is Visceral Design’s Donald Kaufman (guitar/electro beats/synths/production). With these creative constituents in the mix, their unique styles broaden PIEL's ever changing sound.
PIEL’s MUSIC is soul soaring, sensual, electro laced, tribal dance pop romps, dosed with punked out, bombastic liberation frequencies!
After their 2008 debut of “Birthmarks and Bruises” and following their 2010 EP mixed by Ulrich Wild (Deftones, Janes Addiction, Incubus, Stone Temple Pilots), Piel continues in the studio today with a self produced Cat Toy Factory Sessions.
