juice, for EXAUDI (2021) by Pia Rose Scattergood published on 2021-06-09T08:44:48Z Written for EXAUDI vocal ensemble in Spring 2021, the inspiration behind this piece came from a silly little asparagus and chervil jus recipe I found in a cookbook at home (Derby), and conversations I have had about said cookbook with my Mum over the past couple of years. The recipes are super fiddly, and the book is very heavy, but the pages are very striking and it brings us both much joy to flick through. Sections of this piece are sonic and visual interpretations of those pages and the sensation of something catching your eye by complete surprise, mediated through a variety of different notational / textual forms. It is also a homage to the asparagus season, and the seasonal delights we all look forward to yearly. Textual fragments are taken from 'le manoir aux quat saisons'. First performed in Milton Court Concert Hall on Friday 14th May 2021 by Juliet Fraser (soprano), Lucy Goddard (mezzo), Tom Williams (alto), David De Winter (tenor), Simon Whiteley (bass) & Jimmy Holliday (bass), and conducted by James Weeks.
