"An elegiac mixtape featuring ambient, art rock, free jazz, world music, and spoken word..." - @shantihdj
For the twelfth Phreak Power Podcast, Shantih arranged a somber 18-track Mixtape to commemorate the casualties from the country’s two deadly viruses: COVID-19 and racism. Created amidst a global pandemic and nationwide civil unrest, “Good Mourning, America!” is both a requiem and a call for action. It is the first among a series of mixtapes dubbed, “The Elegy Tapes,” with which Shantih aims to console and to inspire.
“Good Mourning, America!” contains an eclectic selection of ambient, art rock, free jazz, and world music by contemporary artists — such as Four Tet, David August, Dave Harrington, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Leon Vynehall, and Nicolas Jaar — as well as older pioneers such as Brian Eno, Laraaji, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Slowdive, and Talk Talk. Throughout the mixtape, Shantih also incorporates spoken word recordings including interviews, poetry, and soundbytes featuring Allen Ginsberg, Angela Davis, Elijah Cummings, James Baldwin, John Coltrane, Killer Mike, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
