Phd is a new band consisting of guitar players Peter Hertmans and Thomas Decock, trombonist Peter Delannoye, double bass player Lennart Heyndels and drummer Matthias De Waele.
The intermingling sound of the two guitars and the trombone reminds of the openness of Paul Motian's or Bill Frisell's approach, but also of the 'Scandinavian' sound of Jacob Bro or Sigur Ros, creating a big sound that the audience experiences as pictural.
The purity and melodic simplicity are important factors in a repertoire that invites every band member to express himself freely, both as an individual as as a band member. Both original compositions and arrangements of classical or liturgical music are combined and put in a new perspective in full respect of the original music.
This tasteful symbiosis is unique in the Belgian jazz scene. The audience stays attentive all along, thanks to the surprising concept that encloses many musical genres.

Phd is een nieuw collectief met Peter Hertmans en Thomas Decock (gitaar/fx), Peter Delannoye (trombone/fx), Lennart Heyndels (contrabas) en Matthias De Waele (drums).
De combinatie van twee gitaren en trombone, die doet denken aan de openheid van Paul Motian, Bill Frisell, ... en de Scandinavische sound van Jakob Bro tot Sigur Rós, creëert een weids kleurenpalet gecreëerd dat de luisteraar als filmisch ervaart.
Het repertoire, waarin de puurheid en eenvoud van de song centraal staan, geeft de muzikanten de vrijheid om zowel als band en als creatieve persoonlijkheid naar voren te treden.
De eigen stukken worden afgewisseld met arrangementen van klassieke of liturgische muziek. Met het kwintet geven ze de goed bewaarde geheimen een nieuw perspectief waarbij toch hun originaliteit bewaard blijft.
De smaakvolle symbiose is een unicum in het Belgische muzieklandschap. Door het verrassend concept, dat vele genres omsluit, blijft de luisteraar geboeid van begin tot eind.

La combinaison des deux guitares et du trombone, une combinaison qui fait penser à la palette sonore de Paul Motian, Bill Frisell ou encore Jacob Bro ou Sigur Ros, crée une atmosphère presque filmique.
Le répertoire, où la pureté et la simplicité de la mélodie dominent, donne la liberté au musiciens de se montrer aussi bien comme groupe que comme individu.
