Pezo N Moody
Pezo N Moody
Pezo N Moody is band of two guys Mpendulo “Pezo” Rodney Gumede & Modikwe “Moody” David Buthelezi. Mpendulo and Modikwe grew up listening to different genres and viewed music in different ways, but they have similar interest which is serving people with good music and touching their hearts and making them with through our music and our performances because that’s our only God given talent that we can use to touch souls and make difference.
Pezo & Moody have known each other for more than 10 years as they stay in the same township but they never thought of hooking up and doing a duo band until a mutual friend “Modise” suggested that the two should hook up and do music. From there we arranged a meeting from there it was rehearsals then gigs now we doing production together.
Moody fell in love with music at a very young age. He grew up listening to every kind of music he came across. The kind of music that made Moody consider playing an instrument was and still is, Jazz. At his home there was always jazz playing as his dad was a huge jazz fan who collected a lot LP’s. Moody’s breakthrough on doing what he always wanted to do was in 1999 when he was still in Primary School, He got an opportunity to join a music project/band called Khulanathi Music Project which was one of the biggest bands in Daveyton. That is where he started music theory and learning how to play a Recorder (music instrument for beginners) and also learnt how to read music.
Moody started learning saxophone in his first year of high school from the same music project that he started learning music from. When he had to be promoted to grade ten Moody realised that the only thing that would make him happy was music that was the time he decided to go study at East Rand School of the Arts (ERSA), his years of study there were a great experience as he got to explore music more. When he was doing grade ten he got a chance to play for East Rand Youth Orchestra and he played with that orchestra up to matriculated.
After matriculating Moody took a gap year on his studies and joined the Gauteng Police Band. He was also selected to play with the National Police Band. Moody is still a police reservist to this day but not active with the police band anymore. While still at the Police band Moody was also called to join the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra to play Trombone by the same Conductor of East Rand Youth Orchestra. In 2010 Moody decided to go further his music studies at Tshwane University of Technology where he studied jazz and he did two years and one semester then dropped out due to personal problems, but did not quit music at all. 2011 Moody started a band together with Pezo
Pezo’s love for music started back when he was 10 years old he & his sister would seat around during weekends listening to the music chart shows on radio and argue on which song will enter the charts and which will be #1, this is where the love for music and radio began. In the early 2000’s Pezo visited his grandmother for December holidays in Durban that’s where he fell deeply in love with house music as his uncle “Gcina” was a DJ and had a huge house music collection cd’s & cassettes, coming back to Jozi Pezo decided to snoop around his Uncles collection and steal a few cd’s & cassettes. Back in Jozi Pezo went deeply into house music.
When Pezo was in grade 6 he started fooling around with Automix (computer djing software) on his sister’s computer. When Pezo was doing grade 8 he met a guy by the name of Thabiso who had vinyl’s Pezo would go the every Saturdays to get a few lessons sadly the guy had to relocate and Pezo had to find a way to continue his djing lessons that’s when he started saving up for sound equipment in 2004 Pezo had his own computer and an amplifier and started djing around tarvens, parties and bashes around his township.
In 2006 Pezo started learning CDJ’s and in 2008 he teamed up with his friends Gimza & DJ Formal forming a trio group The Funk Masterz and started doing Sunday Sessions at a local tarven called Ebhandeni which went very well for a year. In 2010 Pezo got a job as a resident DJ Zake’s Place. In the same year Pezo was approached by Phlash to form the duo band Risal Sounds with Zinzie that’s where Pezo learned how to produce.
In the 2010 Pezo went to Boston Media House to study radio and TV production, he also had a privilege to be part of the Gauteng DJ Carnival search competition where he was part of the top ten East Rand DJ’s sadly he didn’t make it to final round, but that didn’t stop Pezo at all. In September 2010 Pezo decided to do monthly podcasts for fans and friends on social networks, the podcast went viral and even got a slot on Jozi Fm (Johannesburg community radio station), during the same the same year Pezo got approached by Maurice (owner of Chillout Radio SA) who gave Pezo a slot to host his own radio show every Saturdays.
In 2011 Pezo joined Motrax (a music selling site) which he was appointed as the music manager and administrator to date. In the same 2011 that’s where the brand Pezo & Moody was established till now. In 2013 Pezo co-hosted a dance show with DJ Winter on Ek Fm a community radio station based in Tsakane (east side of johannesburg). Pezo’s plans to own a media production company which will release musicians, do films and other TV productions, and would also love to work for SA biggest radio station as a content producer, co-host, programs manager or music compiler.
