Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me like this?" Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?" Romans 9:20-21 ESV or the NIV "Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?" Although the word "use" in those verses may be a fairly modern translation as the original Greek was eis (a preposition) – properly, into(unto) – literally, "motion into which" implying penetration ("unto," "union") to a particular purpose or result. But I think that's the same original Greek from 2 Timothy. So I really think Romans is also very likely the root of the saying. Dictionary.com says use is "to employ for some purpose; put into service; make use of". To say we want God to employ us for the purposes of His will, to "enlist us into his army" if you will, I just don't see this as being bad wording. I can appreciate it being a pet peeve given the negative connotation towards people who are "people users"; however, regardless of how much God loves us and cherishes us as His children..it's still about His will. We can either be a vessel for special purposes or common use of destruction. So maybe if we are going to use the phrase "I want God to use me" maybe we should be more specific on using for what? Because even those creates for dishonorable use is still a use! Thanks for the thought starter. I don't agree with most of the conclusions here but it was at least interesting and lead to deeper study. 2018-04-04T17:51:14Z
