Black Magic Volume 2: Hitchcock's Psycho (The Reconstructed Soundtrack) by Patrice Bäumel published on 2012/02/28 11:37:34 +0000 Get ready for the darkest gig in town. Just in time for the second edition of Black Magic on 3 March @ Trouw Amsterdam (featuring Ivan Smagghe), here's the new podcast. Be warned, it's an experiment and I am not sure how easy this one goes down. I have long been intruigued by combining electronic and classical music, because they are in such contrast with each other. Contrast is what makes music exciting. I took the original score of Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock and reconstructed it. It's a 36 minute long edit that uses, apart from a few percussive elements, only original samples. The composer of the Psycho soundtrack, Bernard Hermann, was a genius in his genre. His approach for Psycho was unique in the way that he only used the string section of the orchestra. The darkness, suspense, cleverness and terror of the score are amazing. Reason enough to watch Psycho again.
