The Heptapods' Second Gift by Stephen Weigel published on 2017-04-11T17:14:34Z In the film “Arrival” (released in 2017 with Amy Adams), aliens called Heptapods come to earth to give humans the gift of their perfect language, the language allowing a sentient being to perceive events out of time. The linguistic thoughts I had because of this movie inspired fan fiction on my end: what would happen if the aliens delivered music to a different place that they landed, music intended for us to play? And how would their hearing, perception, and ability to perceive things out of time affect this process? The music relies on slow cycles, changing textures, and low frequency content in order to try and paint an accurate picture of this present. The premiere of this piece was at the Ball State University Student Composers' Forum, April 6, 2017. Stephen Weigel, piano player and composer Cody Williamson, contrabass clarinet player I can't post the fanfic because it doesn't fit into the description of 4000 characters (so I suppose you'll just have to buy the score... ;) ) Genre Classical
