I was scratching my head trying to figure out what object i could record that would be rich in the entire frequency range, from low bass sounds to high hat style noises. I proceeded to test everything around me as i went through my daily activities - doors, ovens, post boxes, cats. I eventually found my subject - the half-pipe in my local skate park, which promised many different noises to capture! To record the Half-pipe, i used an M-Audio Microtrack 24/96 portable recording device with a stereo condenser microphone. I stamped on the floor of the pipe, which created a heavy boom and I hit the railings with a stick, creating a resounding ringing. A guy on roller blades allowed me to record him grinding the rim and riding the pipe, and i also recorded a skateboard doing the same. I drummed on the side of the pipe also. DRUMS The Kick is made from the sound of stamping on the floor of the half-pipe. The High hat was made from the sound of a skate board rolling on the pipe, and the shaker was made from the same sound, but reversed and high passed. The Snare was made up from five various stamps and hits from the railings and half-pipe, all high passed, individually pitched, enveloped and levelled. Also in the kit is the sound of a roller blader grinding the edge of the pipe. HIGH TONE The spooky tone was originally the sound of a stick on a railing. TIME STRETCHED ATMOSPHERICS These sounds were made by putting the sound of a blader rolling down the pipe through the time stretching application 'Paul Stretch'. ORGAN This organ-like sound was also made from the sound of a stick on a railing, simply Eqed, spread out a bit with the stereo imager and low passed. I then played in the riff on my keyboard. LOW BASS/MIDRANGE The Bass/midrange all used the same source sound - a tiny saw-like wave i cut from my recordings, set loop points and then looped in the samplers. For the low end i put a low pass filter on it and enabled the filter envelope to give more punch. I compressed it, Made it mono with a stereo imager, sent it through tape distortion to fatten it up. ask for any more info! i may chuck up the raw recordings for you at some point peace!
