Frik van Coppenhagen
“Music plays a role in every human being’s life, starting right from birth if you take a lullaby for example. Music is well said to be the language of angels. It’s a way of life, a parallel dimension meshing with ours, perhaps. Sometimes I think it’s the stairway between heaven and earth. Ultimately music puts us in touch with our emotions, and for me sometimes vica verca. If music could look into a mirror, I would be the reflection!” -Frik “PsykoTroniK” van Coppenhagen.
Frik van Coppenhagen AKA PsykoTroniK AKA Sanctum Harbor, was born in Springs, South Africa, on June 10th, 1982.
Frik’s love for various genres of music started growing from a young age, with hard and commercial rock as favorites. At age 10 he fell in love with the hypnotic sound of the piano, but was unfortunate in the luxury of tutoring. So then at the age of 16 he managed to buy his first instrument, a classical guitar, while employed on a weekend basis. It didn’t take too long to realize that he had quite the ear for music as an artist, so after learning basic chords in guitaring, he further progressed by ear & imitation only. Not long after, Frik obtained an electric guitar as well as a semi-acoustic guitar. By now he was completely convinced that music was his destiny.
Having grown up in this day and age, Frik has always been intensely interested in, and intrigued by, technology. You know what they say… “Boys never grow up, their toys just get more expensive.” So in between he started playing around with PC music production software, but without any serious intention for the future.
In Winter of 2003 Frik started a band he called Winterburn. A band of which he was the song writer, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist. Winterburn had the privelage of sharing the stage with artists like, local band turned international - Prime Circle, as well as The Quiet, Overflow, Mass-A-Mendez and many more. The band’s first stage performance was on November 1st 2003, in the Witbank Music Festival at Steve’s Place. The 24-hour entertainment show consisted of 2 stages, 12 bands, some DJs and more.
On May 5th 2004 Winterburn participated in Radio Kragbron’s “Battle of the Bands”, the first event of its kind to ever be presented in Witbank by a local radio station. On May 7th 2004 the band once again took the stage for the launch of Barham Bay, joined by international disk jockey DJ Surge and other bands. Winterburn performed live at various other venues, and it didn’t take long for the band to make their mark locally. “Why” was a song aired on Radio Kragbron, and was voted by locals to be above the likes of Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Robbie Williams…hitting slot number 3 in the top ten! “Why” was also played in some Witbank nightclubs. Still in 2004, the band was sponsored to do a tour covering all Aventura Holliday Resorts. Frik wrote about 9 more songs within the period of a month, to make for a complete album recording of about 12 songs, just in time for the tour.
PsykoTroniK – REBORN:
In around 2005 Winterburn seperated due to unforeseen circumstances, and Frik moved to Johannesburg – the heart of nightlife entertainment in South Africa. That was when his music productions started to excel, as he was no longer a band, but an individual artist.
