Scott Dough aka “No Dough Dub” is an American Musician, Producer and A&R currently based in Japan. Stylistically, Dough partakes in a far flung spectrum of flavors ranging from Ambient tones, DnB excursions to Rude Boy rowdiness. He was first introduced to Dancehall stylie through the late DJ Clint O'Neill (WLRN Miami, FL), “I immediately became hooked and instantly got over my indignant purist musician bias [toward the use of loops and electronic bass lines.]”
A byproduct of early 1990s NYC and Florida rave culture, the old-school dancehall junglist's recent projects include Future Dub, Drumstep and DnB collaborations with the legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry/King Ivier (Jah Warrior Shelter HiFi), Mad Decent, Winstrong, Sky-I, Jah Blaze, in addition to in-studio forays with Xandra Corpora, The Philosophers Club, Joe Goldmark, Micah Dubreuil (Con Brio), Kyle Lesley, and Soundtweaker (I.R.D., Suboculis.)
Dough's multi-instrumental handiwork encompasses session bass stints for David Sancious, Miriam Speyer, Rocky Ramirez, Brod Rob (Grow Records, LoveHaight Records), Curt Olsen, and various acts throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, NY/NJ and Japan. The diverse doughboy has also charted and performed brass arrangements for various projects, his most recent contribution to The Philosphers Club 'Rodeo Radio' LP, which he also Co-Produced. Always looking to overlap and forge new sub-genres, Dough recently proffered the mallets in-studio for marimba embellishments on what was dubbed "organic electronica," which is essentially electronic music where most instrumental elements are performed/tracked live in-studio rather than merely sampling/looping pre-existing content.
Performing under the World Sound/No Dough Dub banner, Dough has run selections at long-running parties such as Dub Mission (Elbo Room SF), toured extensively throughout the US while enjoying residencies at UndergroundSF in San Francisco’s Lower Haight (best known for its long-running DnB party, 'Shelter'), Club OMG in downtown SF as well as resident selecter stints at George’s Club and 19Broadway in Marin County, California.
Possessing a keen business mind, the producer is the catalyst behind “Major Label Startup,” a venture launched in 2011 originally intended as a vanity label for the dub producer to promote his forthcoming EP. The foray experienced surprising growth and by Q3 2011 the brand in effect became an auxiliary A&R for artists Sky-I, and freelancers like Winstrong, as well as Roots-Americana collective The Philosophers Club and power pop act Shutterwax.
Major Label Startup gained traction with fans, artists and industry alike, who have taken a shine to the brand's "party first, get invoiced later" business approach and assortment of arcane marketing slogans. The Label Startup moniker, generally regarded as a jab at the ubiquitous term 'Indie,' is also a nod to its Silicon Valley, California origins. It has also been suggested that the 'M' logo was bitten from the sorta-Indie/pretty much corporate Warner Bros. subsidiary Nonesuch Records (Wilco, others.)
Dough cites producer/engineer extraordinaire Glyn Johns as the person he would most like to meet, referencing Johns as the single-biggest influence on his decision to position himself on the other side of the glass.
