Nikka Mae Lopez
Nikka Mae C. Lopez is a graduate of a Bachelor's degree in Music major in Voice at the University of hte Philippines College of Music, cum laude. She trained for six years in voice under the tutelage of Prof. Alegria O. Ferrer and for her master's degree under Prof. Cecilia Valena.
Nikka has undergone pop voice training in Sing Vocal Power Institute, Center for Pop Music Philippines, and Voice Academy of the Philippines at her early age. She became a member of the Marikina’s Chosen Few (MCF) Singers at the age of fourteen and had given her an opportunity to sing at the 2005 SEA Games held in the Philippines. When she entered high school in St. Scholastica’s Academy of Marikina (SSAM), she became a soprano member of the SSAM High School Glee Club, which had received various awards annually. She also became a vocalist in a pop band Clockstop and collected various kinds of awards including best vocalist award and best original song award, in which she was credited as the songwriter.
In 2008, she entered college and started classical vocal training with Prof. Ferrer. She sung in various operas: as one of the nuns in Francis Poulenc’s The Dialogues of the Carmelites, as a stage chorus member in Vincenzo Bellini’s La Sonnambula, as Anne Page in Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, as Maxima Bonifacio in the musical of Jerry Dadap, Andres Bonifacio: And Dakilang Anak Pawis, and as Konstanze in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio) as her graduation recital. She also did an understudy of Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). She took masterclasses under voice teachers and performers such as Florence Guignolet, Margarita Gomez Giannelli, Arthur Espiritu, Noema Erba, Dr. Kevin Class, and Maestro Alvaro Lozano to name some. In 2011, she participated in the Viva Voce Workshop in Baguio City for a week and had undergone intensive training in performance and song interpretation. She had been the former Vice-President of the UP Voice and Music Theater Guild from 2011-2012, where she actively performed in various productions. She also produced a couple of Salon Concerts in 2010 featuring Filipino Art Songs or Kundiman with pianist Josiah Samaniego in 2010. She had also represented the Philippines at the auditions for the Leyla Gencer Voice Competition in Istanbul, Turkey in 2012. She also sang as the soprano soloist in the annual Handel’s Messiah 2013 at the University of the Philippines Theatre. And most recently, she won an Honorable Mention at the National Music Competitions for Young Artists held last November 2014 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Nikka premiered a lot of 21st Century pieces by various young composers such as Marie-Luise Calvero, Juro Kim Feliz, Reis Luke Aquino, and Alexander John Villanueva, who are simultaneously making their own names in the international contemporary music scene. She is also a member of the Manila Composers’ Lab, which annually produces concerts featuring contemporary music.
As a church minister, Nikka currently serves as the choir head of San Lorenzo Ruiz Choir at the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Our Lady of the Abandoned in Marikina.
