He started studying the piano early with teachers F. Della Bianca and A. Del Cont. He then went on studying the accordion with G. Fassetta and graduated with brilliant results from the Music College “L. Campiani” in Mantua, mentored by E. Zajec.
Nicola performed at countless concerts, both as a solo artist and with various other groups, exploring different musical genres, both in Italy and abroad. Over the last years, his own compositions have taken centre stage.
In 2006 Nicola founded the “QUINTETO PORTEÑO” (N. Milan, accordion – D. Labelli, piano – S. D’Eusanio/N. Mansutti, violin – A. Turchet, double bass – R. Colussi, guitar). With the Quinteto he recorded in 2008 “Decarisimo” in homage to Astor Piazzolla, followed by “Desiderata” published by Alfamusic in Rome, in 2010. This is also Nicola’s debut album as composer and arranger. “Rinascimento” comes next in 2013, also recorded in Rome upon invitation by Alfamusic. The latest recording, in 2016, is the live album “Quinteto Porteño With Strings” consisting of original tracks arranged for Quinteto and strings orchestra. As a solo artist, Nicola recorded in 2017 “Come una figura nella nebbia”: a collection of original piano compositions.
Nicola took part at countless festivals, including: Friulanamente Tango, Fadiesis Accordeon Festival, Fra Acque e Uve, Insolite Note, Acordeons Festival of Bologna, Nei Suoni dei Luoghi, Rassegna grandi interpreti della fisarmonica in Castelfidardo, Musiche in Villa, Estate in Villa, Eticamente, Musei Aperti, GradoJazz. He also performed for various institutions: the Romanian Institute for Culture and Humanistic Research in Venice, A.Gi.Mus (youth music association), the Musae project for the Pordenone province, Rinascimento and Fila a Teatro for the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, the Italian Mandolin Federation, the Fondazione Santa Cecilia in Portogruaro, among others.
His compositions were broadcast by important radio stations (Radio Vaticana “Jazzscoltando”, Radio Tre, Anima Jazz PuntoRadio.fm, Radio Due, Radio Rai Uno) and enthusiastic reviews published on magaziens and newspapers (Gazzettino, Messaggero, Mondomix, Strumenti e Musica, Fisarmonie, RomainJazz, AgendaJazz, Jazz Italia, JazzIt, …). Some of Nicola Milan’s works have been chosen as themes for radio programs on Rai Radio Uno. The album “Desiderata” was nominated one of the 5 best Accordion Jazz albums released in Italy in 2010 at the Orpheus Music Awards. “Rinascimento” was album of the week on Radio Rai Tre.
Nicola also maintains a very active schedule with the following bands: Quinteto Porteño, Seventh Note Gospel Lab, Revelation Gospel Project, Mitili Folk, Trio Porteño and Playa Desnuda.
He’s also an active score composer collaborating with theatre companies like the Compagnia di Arti e Mestieri and Molino RosenKranz, among others. His scores featured in the ERT (Regional Theatre Association) theatre season productions.
Moreover, as a passionate teacher, Nicola has worked with several public and private music schools, particularly “L’Arte della Musica” which he’s also Artistic Director of. Other institutions include the Scuola Comunale di Musica of Latisana and the Fondazione Santa Cecilia in Portogruaro.
Nicola Milan has more than 50 original compositions registered with SIAE (Italian Society of Authors and Publishers).
