Anti-Corruption Watchdog is dysfunctional, ending scrutiny of government one year from election by New Narratives published on 2023-02-19T17:15:32Z Three months since the government’s highly controversial decision to overhaul the Liberian Anti Corruption Commission the country’s independent corruption watchdog has been silenced. Staff say no investigations are being done and morale is at zero. Things have only become more uncertain with the news that the Supreme Court will consider whether the overhaul was constitutional. At the same time anti- corruption activists say they are frightened to talk out after the mysterious deaths of potential whistleblowers. This comes as the government has been engulfed in corruption scandals that led the US Treasury to take the extraordinary step of sanctioning three of President Weah’s top ministers. In this collaboration with New Narratives Varney Dukuly reports that critics are saying the government has shut down all mechanisms for exposing corruption as it heads into next year’s general elections.
