These are many of the songs that the children helped write at New Discovery School. When working with a group of children - we start by talking about how songs are made - what parts go into making a song - and then begin with the words. I approach it as a group storytelling activity - each child contributing a short line. When working with and individual child, they tell me a story - and I write down their words. Then we try to figure out a melody. Sometimes they help create the melody by singing their words - which usually suggests a melodic contour, other times I help that process along. With a class of children, we then record a rough acoustic version for memory - and then practice it over the coming weeks - playing drums, dancing, and acting out the story. Finally, when they are at a point where they know it well - we record a live version as a group. For the auction songs - after recording an acoustic version of the song, I work up a studio version - and then give the children the music in stages so they can practice or see the process. Some kids chose to sing along, sing all of it, or sing nothing at all ;-)
