Yeah, I used to own the original Oberheim FVS, and I'd love a new Oberheim, but alas...btw I think you're right, Jan's controller apparently can send unique bend info (based on the FVS assignment concept) to separate voices on external synths, so I bet he's controlling the DX with one of his specialized controllers such as the Lynx. I suggested to Elliot Sears once that they needed to document Jan's gear for historical purposes (with photos!) ...I'd love to see a page at his website that gets into the intricacies of his various setups. Jan's the man. 2011-07-22T20:04:35Z Comment by Dan Ling @dan-ling: It does sound like a DX7 jazz Guitar patch but it might be something else. He's certainly not controlling it with a DX7 keyboard, because that note assignment isn't possible with the DX. He may have converted the sound to a soundfont or simply be controlling a TX-802 or similar with a custom controller such as his Probe. 2011-07-20T20:55:26Z Comment by Dan Ling @mpmsoundtracks: It has nothing to do with aftertouch, it's called polyphonic note assignment, and there are a few softsynths that make this technique possible today, such as Synthix, but it requires a bit of convoluted programming, whereas the Oberheim FVS offered it as a simple button selection, because that synth was designed for advanced playing technique, and today's synths have largely ignored playing technique in their programming. With this setting, the first note pressed would bend while subsequent notes wouldn't (listen and you'll hear the technique here when one note slides up to the others the was Hendrix and Ponty used to do). It offered many other possibilities related to playing technique too. 2011-07-20T20:51:11Z Comment by FM Attack love it! 2011-07-20T17:38:56Z Comment by Lost Years Awesome track! 2011-07-20T17:33:55Z Comment by Andreas Geide ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh orgasmus^^ 2011-07-15T22:28:17Z Comment by Dan Ling Jan's classic "open string" technique (bend the first note down only) - nobody else ever played synth like this - ever, and no softsynth even offers this technique as a possibility because today's players aren't players - they're programmers 2011-07-10T20:44:49Z Comment by JohnHopkins Nice track.
