Birnbaum is currently based between Amsterdam New York and Rockaway Beach. His current project called Walter's is the contemporary wing of the Walter Elwood Museum in Amsterdam, with satellite exhibitions in Rockaway Beach, scheduled for this summer. From 2014 through 2016, he co-ran the project Topless in Rockaway Beach with Jenni Crane. Birnbaum has mounted solo exhibitions at Denny Demin Gallery, in New York City; Space Gallery in Portland; the Museum Wilhelm Morgner in Germany, and Casino in Luxembourg, among others.
