Musiqana “Musiqana” - www.musiqana.net - is a freely accessible, non-subscription website for performers, teachers and students of Arabic music, interested in learning more about the academic background of Arabic music. Written and audio-visual materials are developed, produced and put at the disposal of teachers and students, divided into three subjects: maqamaat and taqaseem (modes and improvisation), takht sharqe (oriental ensemble) and eqa (percussion). The materials were developed and recorded by renown musicians Sharbel Rohana, Khaled Mohammad Ali, Ahmad AlKhatib and Youssef Hbeisch in the framwork of "The Music Conservatory Project" of the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music headed by Suhail Khoury and the Beit Almusica Shefa'amr Conservatory headed by Amer Nakhleh. This includes video teaching materials that guides students through the learning process of an aural tradition and employ interactive approaches to capture the essence and uniqueness of Arabic Music. These new teaching materials, utilizing new information technologies, represent a breakthrough in the teaching of Arabic music. The teaching materials are accessible through free web applications, which can be used to create effective online learning sites. Our initiative makes these new educational resources accessible to the entire Arab-speaking world. “Musiqana” and the materials featured on the website are part of a larger project - “The Music Conservatory Project” between the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music Jerusalem, the Beit Almusica Shefa’amr and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London from 2011-2014.
