Somnium Futurum (2016) by Anthony L. Sanchez published on 2016-04-05T02:29:14Z Corinne Klemenc, B-Flat Clarinet Stereophonic Playback Program Notes I began writing this short work on January 2016 on commission from clarinetist, composer and UGA alumnus Corinne Klemenc. Somnium Futurum (Latin for “Future Dream”) attempts to reflect an ethereal, at time surreal, atmosphere by digitally distorting natural sounds. The sounds that I had recorded and compiled as samples for the electronic portion of this piece stem from my trips to Puerto Rico in the summer of 2014 and winter of 2015. These samples range from animals (exotic birds and coqui frogs) to the modernized sounds (wind chimes, street noises and a cooling fan). Using the ACID Music Studio 10.0, Audacity and Sound Forge Audio Studio 9.0 music software programs, I had compiled and distorted these sounds within a stereophonic setting. In devising the acoustic segment for clarinet, Klemenc had requested that I compose a part that would complement the electronic portion of the work while still focusing on playability and accessibility. The pitches used in the clarinet part of Somnium Futurum stem from possible audible tones derived from the electronic portion. In order to synchronize both parts, I chose to write this piece by relying on real time instead of fixed meters and bar lines. Genre Classical
