SHE Spells Doom - Neon Death EP [MNSTRT0015]
Release Date : 03/05/2019
“I'm pretty lucky to have lived on 2 continents (Africa and Europe) cause it colours my music, for sure.”
Monstart and SHE Spells Doom are proud to announce the release of “Neon Death” on April the 26th, 2019, the new EP by the talented artist from Zambia and 15th release of the French label.
With the idea to expose a darker side of himself while combining influences coming from Funk, Hip Hop and electronic music, SHE Spells Doom was born in 2012 from the confrontation of Africa and Europe. After leaving Zambia as a rapper, he quickly became an electronic music fan after moving to Geneva in 2008. Eight years later he came back to his motherland and began to blend all the influences he had to create in his own material, the telling of his story.
Besides, SHE Spells Doom has also been influenced by the sci-fi/horror movies of Carpenter and Cronenberg, but also the modernity of Timbaland and Missy Elliot (that can be heard on "New Body", without forgetting the Congolese Rumba and Soukous.)
Regarding his music, he combines these influences with all the music he’s heard and loved while growing in a family that thrived by music. Describing his sound, SHE Spell Doom writes:
« I 'd say my style is laid back and hazy but it BANGS. In the beginning, it wasn't a conscious effort but I'd end up with a really airy synth-line on top of heavy drums a lot of the time I made something. I started to notice this common thread in my music and I've recently started owning it.
I think being born in the late '80s gives me the advantage of being able to appreciate things of my time and the present landscape of music because I've had the privilege of watching the trends shift while being in the loop enough to appreciate them. Also, I'd say I'm pretty lucky to have lived on 2 continents (Africa and Europe) because it colours my music, for sure»
With Neon Death you can hear all those influences, going through a journey where you can feel the different experiences of SHE Spell Doom, from his twist on Gqom (Vega Tool) after a week in Red Bull’s studio in Cape Town, to atmospheric sounds (Afterlife II) showing his skills on drawing beautiful melodies without drums.
“A lot of the time I just set out with the main goal of making people move but I also use my music tap into sides of me people wouldn't normally see. I'd like my music to highlight the dichotomy”
After being in touch with Monstart for a while, it feels only natural to hear Neon Death on this label, a symbol of a daily basis exploration and support of an underrepresented scene for ten years now.
This EP takes part a new year full of eclectic releases for the Montpellier/Paris based label and promoter Monstart, also celebrating its 10th birthday this year.
Once Ouanounou’s and Chatte Chatoyante teeth were cut as promoters, Monstart was born. Renowned Dj and visionary dancer, they decided to infuse their science of the scene into everything they touched, making Monstart hard to miss when you like to groove.
Each EP is a love letter to the clubbing world and physical experiences it offers as you can feel it listening to the impressive Monstart Vol.5 compilation, released in 2017.
As Ouanounou notes: “Dance and music must be associated for us, we can’t even imagine a party without more than just DJs performing”.
Turn it up loud and dive into Monstart’s world.”
