Moisture Podcast 003
Undefault is a duo consisting of the two guys Oleg and Roman. Credo of Undefault is to show people the dark side of minimal techno, with the use of deep vibrations and a cold sounds. The two musicians have been playing DJ sets separately before, but at some point decided to unite their talents by creating a single qualitative music project. Undefault‘s musical career started in 2007. In their live performances they mix twisted abstract constructions with minor moods and complex rhythmic patterns. Every track has a philosophy of the struggle between good and evil and every loop is a mysterious story with a sophisticated plot. Their productions invite the listener’s mind to wander into strange new worlds.
Short unterview from Undefault for [moisture] team:
Part One: Roma
Roma, how is your morning begun? Maybe with the sounds of the running shower?
No, I like to take bath and tea with lemon. No techno.
Do you listen something special in the morning, maybe radio? What sites do you visit in the morning? Cause morning – it is a special energy.
If I got to bed early, I listen to the electronic music. Also I check my e-mail, Facebook and Skype in the morning.
Since what time have you liked minimal?
I think I’ve liked Minimal since 2005, but for now I know that I’ve lost a lot of time.
Yes, even now early minimal is special! And why do you think that you’d lost time?
Everything that I didn’t listen. Now I am relisting all my old materials. And you know it is –SOMETHING!
And what from the old material really caught your attention? What would you recommend to listen from 2005?
From the old, of course, Vladislav Delay, Frank Bretschneider. Now I am listening a lot of Farben.
Where would you like to live? In which city?
In Prague, it's my favorite city. I have fallen in love with it and I think it's mutual. I like calm and there is plenty of it .I liked the Shadow. Beer gardens, fresh air and nature.
What does hold you in Moscow?
Moscow is not so bad as I always thought. It is interesting for developing and testing for resistance yourself and also I found great friends and like-minded persons here. We are contriving a new revolution with them .
Revolution! What does it look like in your imagination?
My revolution is the answer to the gray musical routine, which firmly established in Moscow, there are some cool communities that normally make a good parties, but it seems to me, all are tired and lost their individuality. I make a bet on my fresh view and view of my friends. We are launching a vinyl label where we will mix the styles like fruits in a blender…
I am trying to ignore the well known names. I’m going to tell everyone about the new names, benefit of their plenty, you have just to look for.
Can you accept the fact that creativity - is unmet sexual energy? I mean, that it is the inspiration, as well as new ideas or even sounds that come to your mind, they do not come for themselves. Something brings them up to us, or they are attracted to us by something. How do you feel it?
Well, perhaps and sex can be compared with the music ... I don’t like to disassemble art on molecules, where it comes from, and so on. I am afraid to know some secret and will be disappointed. This is "something" magical - I am quite happy to this. For example, tracks Ricardo Villalobos – it is really sexual energy, that is why he knows the secret. Here is another clear example of sexual energy:
Martina Topley-Bird - Sandpaper Kisses
Do you record separate sounds? For example, the sound of turning the key in the door or something like that?
Honestly, very rare, but think I need to do it.. Now I’m very interested in improving the drums in my tracks. Bruno Pronsato, Ricardo, Easy Changes do it well,.
Are you planning to go to Berlin?
Yes, in January we would have there a couple of parties. I like left radicalism there.
Part Two: Oleg
Oleg, and what kind of music do you listen lately?
Lately, I prefer something with elements of trip-hop and downtempo. In general, than more experimental music than it is better.
Tell me, why did you liked minimal and how was developing your musical taste?
Honestly, I was hoisted on minimal by my mate Roma. Firstly, I did not really understand, because I listened and wrote hip-hop before. Then I wanted to make more experiments and began to listen minimal, began to go to the parties and everything had begun. I started my attempts in writing another music.
Do you have vinyl records?
Yes, I have vinyl records, but quite a bit. In my plans to build a vast collection.
What are your main vinyl records in the collection?
Main vinyl records - all that relates to the Nervmusic and Perlon label. I Love them very much.
Can you tell us a little about your future views, and what are you interested in latest time and what does excite your imagination?
I am interested in jazz and all that belongs to him. Jazz for me - it's improvisation and I like to improve myself in it. I love the sound of live instruments. When I am writing the tracks I imagine a group - (drums, guitar, keyboard, etc.), and begin to create. It’s necessary to improve yourself ... Lately, I’m very busy, and music always goes by the wayside. I think it mustn’t be in such a way for the musician.
