Often I read of other people stories; their childhoods that are a sufficient script for a movie. Other stories that are enough to make you dumb struck about the inequalities of this world. My childhood story is neither good, enough for a script nor an illustration of opulence but a genesis of an art. I discovered my love for recording music by chance; an ‘alliance’ of young men pursuing the interests of their hearts.
We moved around some in my childhood. But after 13 years, we moved into a house next to a person who would become iconic in my music journey. And that was Joe, a martial artist and skillful rapper whose studio time I always looked forward to. He was more like a big brother and a teacher to me. We had a lot of fun practicing martial arts, beatboxing, rapping and writing lyrics. It so happens that I lived pretty close to my Pop too. I would spend most of my weekends at his home, taking martial arts lessons from him. It wasn’t just his martial art skills that intrigued me, It was also his skill at playing the piano, I made an attentive audience during his keyboard sessions. He soon took notice giving his keyboard, my first musical instrument to own.
Years later, when I turned 16, I met Leonel, an audio engineering student. He had converted his garage into a recording studio, a place I often spent my time at. I was his audience and his sidekick; often giving him my wild ideas that he liked so much. So he kept me around, even when he had clients in.
In turn, he taught me the basics and production, gifting me with computer software and musical equipment he no longer needed. Back home, I would record my lyrics over well known artists’ instrumentals. Over time, I started creating my own sounds. With that my journey to recording music began.
Leonel was always the first to sample my creations. Though he did not like the sound quality, he loved my creativity and skill. Most of all, he loved my musical arrangements. My skill grew with time, even getting requests to make intros, outros and beats for his clients, but my interest laid in producing my own music.
My deep connection to Hip-Hop and R&B from a tender age defines my love for the genres. My musical journey has been marked by remarkable stylistic growth and musical diversity. I not only express myself through music but also connect to my surroundings through my compositions.
I draw my inspiration from many sources. To me, music is not just a means of earning a living but to communicate my emotions. My ideal type of music is one that has a meaningful message, that is deep, sharing my life experiences while addresses real world issues.
