Mitsune 蜜音 Berlin Mitsune is a Japanese folk fusion ensemble from Berlin, with members hailing from Japan, Germany, Australia and Greece. Fronted by a powerful trio of female shamisen players, backed with double bass and percussion, Mitsune presents a musical and sensual feast that combines folklore, raw emotion, instrumental virtuosity, spirited vocals, wild fashion styles and infectious, driving grooves to move and captivate. The heart and soul of Mitsune is the Tsugaru shamisen, a 3-stringed Japanese lute once favoured by blind folk and itinerant musicians of olden Japan. Mitsune both honours and modernises shamisen tradition, conveying their own personal and cultural stories and performing new styles on this ancient instrument. They play a mix of reimagined Japanese folk songs and original tracks drawing from eastern blues, jazz, rock, psychedelic and cinematic music, their performances brimming with joyful energy. On stage, Mitsune creates a visual and sartorial fantasy-world, where traditional meets avant-garde. Since their formation in 2018 Mitsune has performed extensively across Europe. They released their sophomore album 'Hazama' in February this year, praised in Songlines, Rolling Stone, Jazzthing and RootsWorld, and entering the Transglobal World Music Chart at #10. Mitsune returns to the stage this year to celebrate their new album.
