Audio Article: To slow an epidemic, focus on handwashing by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) published on 2020-02-11T14:46:11Z A new study estimates that improving the rates of handwashing by travelers passing through just 10 of the world’s leading airports could significantly reduce the spread of many infectious diseases. The findings, which deal with infectious diseases in general including the flu, were published in late December, just before the recent coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China, but the study’s authors say that its results would apply to any such disease and are relevant to the current outbreak. In one hospital cafeteria I counted about 5,000 lunches sold per work day. There were two bathrooms (Men, Women) each had two sinks. Lunch service is 3-hours long. CDC states: scrub hands for at least 20 seconds. Thus, hand scrubbing time is 7 hours/sink/lunch period (not counting time to approach the sink, lather rinse and dry). Line to wash hands should start at 5-am before lunch is served! Departments of health continue to approve restaurants, hospitals, etc. that are unable to reasonably manage hand washing expectations that our Federal Government (CDC) provides. It isn’t just the bathrooms. Cashiers touch everyone’s money and credit cards… this is the single point of contact in every establishment. When will we see laws about strict use of RFID credit cards where hand to hand contact is eliminated? We have the technology, we need to engineer the correct use of the same. 2020-02-27T16:35:57Z
