If I Was Your Lover - Marshall Vincent x minor9th [2022] by minor9th published on 2022-01-12T15:12:00Z An entry for the SA recompose competition. I loved the original of this song when I first heard it and felt compelled to sit with it for a while. As a queer man I guess I heard a bittersweet mix of pain and potential joy in this track. In this interpretation, I've tried to highlight self-doubt and frustration that can accompany the lived experience of (early) queer relationships. But I also wanted to signal the very true hope that it gets better. Some deliberate nods to queer synthpop legends Bronski Beat, a bit of Massive Attack, Madonna, and yes, the imaginary ice cream van that I like to think Enya makes music out of in Llandudno.
