A Journey Into Sound - 10 YEARS! - click for info by Mindtrap published on 2013/04/08 13:49:43 +0000 10 YEARS OF MINDTRAP MUSIC! marking the decennial anniversary of the Mindtrap project, here is the first tune I made under the project name, all the way back in 2003. The piece was debuted at the Young Composer's Concert put on by the college I attended, showcased at volume and complete with full-sized projected visualizations. There was little doubt that this was the piece that stole the show, drawing rapturous applause after the long-suffering audience had endured what amounted to a fairly painful night of predominantly abstract and unlistenable musical experiments, for the most part put together by well-meaning amateurs still at the start of their musical journeys. Having been experimenting and recording under other artist names for several years prior, this piece ended up being a magnum opus of sorts that bolstered my confidence and completely opened up the world of electronic dance music for my creative side. A Journey Into Sound was entirely programmed using a hardware synthesizer, making full use of the 16-channel MIDI sequencer built into the first iteration of the Roland Fantom workstation keyboard, then recorded directly from the outputs - no computer, no VSTs, no mastering - despite this relatively old fashioned setup, the final work still sounds surprisingly good, proving that whilst today's easy access to user-friendly technology can make things more convenient, there is no substitute for a good idea, solid technique, and the persistence to see an artwork realised, no matter what obstacles stand in the path ahead.
